In Canada, 1.5% of our population feeds the remaining 98.5% through farming. Because Canada has such a diverse climate, available land and innovative thinking, agriculture now drives our economy. In part 1 of a 3 part series, Lindsay Biscaia looks at some unique jobs now found in the industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Agricultural experts say jobs in the industry today go beyond just driving a tractor as farmers embrace new technologies.<\/p>\n

According to Farm and Food Care<\/a> \u2014 a lobby group for farmers across Ontario \u2014 the agriculture and food and beverage sector industry provides about $34 billion<\/a> to the province\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

And according to Steve Brackenridge, the director of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, one in eight jobs in Canada is in agriculture, food and beverage processing or related fields.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s four jobs waiting for every person who\u2019s graduating from an ag program under the University of Guelph currently,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

And advances in technology have helped to create new jobs and roles in agriculture, notes Paul Glenn, president of the Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lot more high-scale, so it\u2019s not just holding a steering wheel anymore,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s using global positioning systems to actually navigate the equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He notes many jobs found in agriculture today include accountants, technicians, public relations, and anyone in the trades.<\/p>\n

There are also new unique jobs such as the use of drones to assist farmers.<\/p>\n

Norm Lamothe, the owner of Deveron UAS, a full-service drone company in Cavan, Ont., collects data on crops. Lamothe says the cameras on the drones measure the health of the crops through infrared technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy background is actually in aviation, and I left that career to pursue the family farm,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a local grower here who actually introduced me to drone technology at the agriculture level. I investigated the technology, and decided to pursue a small business.\u201d<\/p>\n

His small business has now turned into a company that operates across North America, with 25 employees.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of our UAVs fly by themselves from set missions, we\u2019re fully licensed by Transport Canada, our operations are strictly regulated,\u201d said Lamothe.<\/p>\n

Lamothe says he\u2019s looking for new employees who have the required skills, such as a background in aviation as well as agriculture.<\/p>\n

\u201cCertainly pilots. We hire pilots every summer \u2026 and also we\u2019re looking for individuals that have a tech background in statistics and data analysis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lamothe says technology should help the agricultural industry thrive.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology is going to play a strong role in increasing efficiency, and ultimately the amount of money that a farmer can put in his jeans at the end of the day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Glenn says more people need to start looking at the agriculture industry as an employment option.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of unemployed people in Canada, and a lot of them don\u2019t ever think of ag. Everyone that\u2019s three or four generations off farming now really have a different perspective of what their grandpa\u2019s farm looked like, and what agriculture looks like today.\u201d<\/p>\n
