Someday you may be able to call Amazon&#039;s drones.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Seattle tech giant is moving closer to making that scenario a real possibility after winning approval from federal officials this month for <a href=\"http:\/\/patft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;co1=AND&amp;d=PTXT&amp;s1=10313638.PN.&amp;OS=PN\/10313638&amp;RS=PN\/10313638\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a patent<\/a> for &quot;home surveillance&quot; drones. <\/p>\n<p>Company officials stress that the plan is still in its infancy, but the patent papers describe a future in which Amazon customers order drones to hover around a home and scan for things such as a garage door left open, a broken window, graffiti or a fire.<\/p>\n<p>As Amazon envisions, a customer can have a package delivered by drone and then instruct the unmanned aerial vehicle to conduct a &quot;surveillance action,&quot; the authors of the patent wrote.<\/p>\n<p>When the drone detects something awry, a text message or telephone call can be sent to the homeowner or to local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;An alert may be provided to multiple recipients, such as a service provider (such as a security provider), an operator, a user, or a municipal entity such [as] a police or fire department,&quot; the patent materials say. <\/p>\n<p>Amazon has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2015\/11\/30\/457884746\/amazon-offers-new-glimpse-of-what-its-drone-delivery-could-look-like\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">testing<\/a> drone delivery technology for years, and the company now says that swarms of the retail giant&#039;s Prime Air delivery drones will be taking off from fulfillment centers and able to fly up to 15 miles carrying packages under five pounds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jilliandonfro\/2019\/06\/05\/amazon-new-delivery-drone-remars-warehouse-robots-alexa-prediction\/#5838ff2a145f\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&quot;in a matter of months.&quot;<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>In April, the Federal Aviation Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/04\/23\/716360818\/faa-certifies-googles-wing-drone-delivery-company-to-operate-as-an-airline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved<\/a> plans by Google&#039;s parent company to start delivering packages by drone. <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2019-03-ups-package-delivery-drone.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UPS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpdhl.com\/en\/media-relations\/press-releases\/2019\/dhl-launches-its-first-regular-fully-automated-and-intelligent-urban-drone-delivery-service.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DHL Express<\/a> are also experimenting with drone-delivery technology.<\/p>\n<p>To address some of the privacy concerns that arise from the proposed service, Amazon says it will use geofencing, or placing a digital perimeter around a specific location, to ensure that the homes of people who do not want their properties videotaped will not be recorded. As Amazon puts it: &quot;the surveillance data is modified in order to exclude, blur, obscure, excise, mask, or hide data referring to the excluded location.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Amazon spokesman John Tagle said in a statement that patents take years to reflect a &quot;current product roadmap.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The company, he said, takes consumer privacy seriously. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;Some reports have suggested that this technology would spy or gather data on homes without authorization,&quot; Tagle said. &quot;To be clear, that&#039;s not what the patent says.
