(Fox News)<\/p>\n<p>During the recent \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/inciweb.nwcg.gov\/incident\/6352\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maroon Fire<\/a>\u201d near Flagstaff, the more than 8,000-acre fire at the Maroon Crater was an area used for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/topic\/world-war-two\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World War II<\/a> artillery training. Unexploded ordnances, which are explosive weapons (bombs, bullets, shells, grenades, mines, etc.), were \u201clikely present\u201d around the crater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Maroon Fire posed some unique challenges that there&#8230;(was) an unexploded ordnance area that we wanted to be able to put fire in but we didn\u2019t want to put firefighters on the ground, for obvious reasons,\u201d Jager said. \u201cNor did we want low-level manned aircraft in that area for when we were doing aerial ignition. So, this posed the really perfect scenario to use a drone to do aerial ignition on the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with the explosives, there was also a big KV power line Jager and the team were trying to protect, as well.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S<\/a>. The drones become another member of the crew, giving firefighters a bird\u2019s eye view with live-streaming capabilities to get a real-time visual on the fire.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/tech\/drone-impedes-arizona-firefighters-efforts-to-battle-wildfire\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DRONE IMPEDES ARIZONA FIREFIGHTERS&#039; EFFORTS TO BATTLE WILDFIRE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#039;s just about providing firefighters with the ability to see what&#039;s going on, on the ground,\u201d Vogel said. \u201cGiving them a view that they wouldn&#039;t have, that they didn&#039;t have before. Hopefully saving lives and giving them the ability to fight that fire more effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to multiple reports, drones have been used in previous wildfires in recent years in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/west\/california\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a>. And according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/videos\/category\/smithsonian-channel\/drones-are-now-being-used-to-battle-wildfires\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Smithsonian<\/a>, during the massive 2013 fire at Yosemite National Park, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/military\/national-guard\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Guard<\/a> flew a MQ1 predator drone from March Air Base 350 miles to Yosemite to fight the fire. It was the first time they used the aircraft to support non-military officials.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to today, now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/tech\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">technology<\/a> is becoming more readily available. (Fox News)<\/p>\n<p>Vogel said over the next five years, drones will be \u201cgame-changing\u201d and he expects them to be part of the everyday equipment and tools for wildland firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>But he said drones have also become a deterrence. Drones from the public have cause firefighters to shut down a few of operations when there was an unidentified drone spotted.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Forest Service\u2019s coverage area of Grand Canyon National Park, Kaibab and Coconino National Forests, Flagstaff and Verde Valley Area National Monuments\u2014plan to use drones on future missions.
