As EU member states rush to weaponize unmanned planes, those who monitor ‘collateral damage’ to civilian populations and abuses of international law brought about by extensive use of armed drones ask EU countries, as MEPs recently did, to set up a legal framework and to uphold human rights.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently granted a waiver to State Farm to allow the insurer the ability to inspect damage caused by Hurricane Florence.

The approval, received just last week, allows State Farm to operate drones on longer range flights and above people – something it could not do operating under Part 107 rules.

“That requirement through the small UAS rules, to maintain the vehicle within line of sight, that can limit how far we can fly and it limits some of the opportunities for us to fully utilize the technology,” Todd Binion, P&C claims staff consultant for State Farm explained. “The other limitation…that creates challenges is the prohibition of flying over people.”

He said that limitation can be problematic during times of disasters when recovery efforts are underway.

The insurer has been testing drone flights since 2012 and currently uses UAVs for single roof inspections.

A new fleet of robots and drones designed to test for chemical agents, provide 3D mapping and identify casualties have been put through their paces by British troops, police officers and scientists for the first time.

Tests of the cutting-edge multi-million-pound project, co-funded by the Ministry of Defense and the Home Office, included robots that can ‘read’ and climb stairs and miniature drones weighing less than a bar of soap which could soon come into service to rapidly assess hazardous scenes.

In July’s ‘Tech Log’ we looked at the CAA’s CAP1391 definition of a low-cost electronic conspicuity device for use in Class G ‘see and avoid’ airspace, and the ADS-B (Automatic Dependence Surveillance Broadcast) technology upon which it is based.

The Biggest Little City in the World last week claimed another title when a single operator flew multiple drones delivering automated external defibrillators as part of a Federal Aviation Administration pilot program.

The first flights were successfully completed using drones made by Flirtey that are designed to move heavier payloads over longer distances and for more than one to be flown by a lone “pilot” in Reno, Nev.
