President Trump Approves $2 Billion Sale of Unarmed Surveillance Drones to India Ahead of Meeting

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Trump administration has authorized the sale of unarmed surveillance drones to India, the manufacturer said Friday, as the two nations' leaders prepare for their first face-to-face meeting.

India initiated its request to buy 22 Guardian MQ-9B unmanned aircraft for maritime surveillance last year. The deal is estimated to be worth about $2 billion. The offer is still subject to congressional approval.

The green light from the administration marks a further deepening in defense ties as India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets with President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.

Modi's two-day visit to Washington, which starts Sunday, takes place amid uncertainty over the relationship because of differences on trade and other issues.

When “Minority Report” hit theaters on June 21, 2002, it arrived to an America — and a world — that feels equal parts familiar and alien. We were less than a year into a post-9/11 climate of increased surveillance and color-coded terror alerts. But smartphones, social media and cloud computing were only at their most nascent forms: the iPod and Windows XP were less than a year old, after all.
The film, in which police use psychic “precogs” to arrest people for crimes they haven't yet committed, was based on a Philip K. Dick short story from 1956. But it was set in the year 2054. Tom Cruise, as head precrime cop John Anderton, ends up getting framed for one such future crime. But “Minority Report” was always, in a way, about the future as viewed through the past.

Next up on the White House's tech agenda: drones and universal broadband.
As part of a weeklong tech summit, President Donald Trump on Thursday will meet with tech executives to discuss advanced wireless technologies and drones. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure and CenturyLink CEO Glen Post will attend the meetings, as will executives from Verizon and T-Mobile, reported Reuters.
AT&T and Verizon didn't respond to a request for comment.
CenturyLink confirmed that Post and CTO Aamir Hussain will participate in the White House meetings. Sprint's Claure tweeted on Tuesday that he'd be attending the meetings. T-Mobile said “senior” executives would be at the White House summit, but didn't provide specifics.
