World-first croc-spotting drones could soon be patrolling Australian beaches

Swimmers in Australian tropical waters could soon be protected by high-tech crocodile-spotting drones equipped with artificial intelligence, able to peer through murky waters and spot hungry predators.
A member of The Ripper Group, an Australian drone services company, confirmed to Hack that a trial of the technology is underway in Far North Queensland, where technicians are teaching the drones to distinguish between crocs and tree trunks.
The Ripper Group already supplies shark-spotting drones for Australian beaches, as well as drones that look out for rips and swimmers in distress.
Spotting crocodiles, however, is much harder than sharks, according to the company's chief operations officer, Ben Trollope.
“Version one is in testing stage at the moment but not mainstream,” he said.
“Our teams up in Far North Queensland are conducting testing to gather more data and test a range of different senses and capabilities.
“The biggest issue for us is the murky water, and that the crocs ..

LUXEMBOURG, Aug 19 — Buzzing like a giant insect over the verdant Moselle Valley, a drone sprays fungicide over rows of vines.

Luxembourg wine producer Corinne Kox began trials of the small unmanned aircraft last month over part of her century-old family estate near the borders with France and Germany.

The test drone, guided by a pilot operating a digital control panel on the ground, sprays more accurately and less wastefully than a helicopter which her family sometimes uses, she said.

Kox, who is in her late 30s, is among the trailblazers in Europe deploying drones in wine production.

“It gives us some flexibility, especially on the slopes,” she told AFP.

“With a tractor, it is sometimes dangerous to drive right after a rainfall because it slips,” said Kox, who is gradually assuming mana..

FAA approves Kansas for first unique drone flight

Friday

Aug 16, 2019 at 6:21 PM

The Kansas Department of Transportation received the green light from the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct a unique drone flight.
This flight will be performed beyond the visual line of sight, meaning it will fly past the operator’s ability to monitor it from the ground.
“With very few exceptions, the Federal Aviation Administration restricts operations of commercial Unmanned Aerial System to remain within Visual Line of Sight of the operating crew at all times,” said Kurt Carraway, UAS executive director of Applied Aviation Research Center at Kansas State University Polytechnic. “For many applications, such as linear infrastructure inspections, cargo delivery and public safety, there is a demand signal for operations of unmanned aircraft beyond the visual line of sight of the operating crew.”
This flight is a result of efforts by the Kansas Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program team. The team is made up of 31 members who ..
