JUST LAST WEEK, DRONES WERE USED BY POLICE TO KEEP TABS ON A MAN DURING A PARENTAL ABDUCTION. THE SANTA CRUZ POLICE DEPARTMENT DOES NOT HAVE DRONES. INVESTIGATORS DEPENDED ON THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE DRONES TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE KIDNAPPER. MOVING FORWARD, THE CITY WANTS TO IMPOSE SAFEGUARDS TO PROTECT THE CIVIL LIBERTIES AND CIVIL RIGHTS BEFORE ANY SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY IS DEPLOYED “THERE'S A LOT OF TECHNOLOGY THAT'S EVOLVING-ADVANCING SO QUICKLY THAT IT'S DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HOW IT'S GOING TO IMPACT CITIZENS AND ONE THING THAT'S BEEN SHOWN IS THAT PREDICTIVE POLICING AND SOME OF THESE ..

Police to get tough new anti-drone powers including on-the-spot fines

Police will be given stop and search powers around airports and prisons in new drone legislation going through Parliament, the Government has announced.
Officers will be able to land, inspect and seize drones if an offence has been committed and a warrant is obtained, the Department for Transport said.
The Air Traffic Management and Unmanned Aircraft Bill will amend the Police Act 1997 to allow the police and senior prison authorities to authorise the use of counter-drone measures to combat illegal drone use.
On the spot fines will be introduced for certain offences such as flying drones too high or close to buildings without permission, or failing to complete the online registration or safety test.
Since November 2019, it has been mandatory for operators of small unmanned aircraft to register themselves and take an online competency test.
Transport Minister Baroness Vere said: “Most people using drones want to do so responsibly, and we encourage them to familiarise themselves wit..

Problem Solvers obtain internal emails about northeastern Colorado drone investigation

Please enable Javascript to watch this video
DENVER — Internal emails from the state’s Division of Fire Prevention and Control reveal how the agency handled media inquiries and tips from the public during a search for drones flying in northeastern Colorado.

The department released more than 100 pages of documents to the FOX31 Problem Solvers after we made an open records request for emails written during late December and early January, containing the word “drone.”

The request led the agency to issue a public statement confirming its involvement in the drone investigation.

“FOX31 just submitted a (Colorado Open Records Act) request to DFPC for all emails with the word Drone for the four days surrounding the investigation, so we would like to put out this statement to media tomorrow in order to stop the rumors,” said an email drafted by Patricia Billinger, a spokesperson for the Colorado Division of Public Safety, a department which includes the DFPC.

Drone zone: Group flies competitive copter races across Mid-South

Please enable Javascript to watch this video MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A new competition is growing in the sports world, and Memphis is getting in on the action.
Drone racing puts the player virtually inside the drone, which can then fly up to 100 mph. The Mid-South was without a connection to competitive drone racing, until 901FPV.

David Myers, member of 901FPV and a teacher at St. Louis Catholic School, said the group introduces the virtual sports to people unfamiliar with drone racing.

“It's something you just have to experience to understand,” Myers said. “It's incredible to see in person. It's a spectacular thing to see some of these pilots maneuvering these obstacles.”

The FPV in 901FPV stands for first-person view, as players put on a virtual reality headset, putting their eyes at the front of the drone, then steer the drones through courses, sometimes reaching 100 mph.

“Just put on a set of our goggles,” Myers said. “It's unlike anything I've ..
