‘A noisy nuisance’: Drones slammed in submission to new inquiry

AdvertisementHousehold delivery drones are an invasive, under-regulated technology whose potential benefits to the ACT would not outweigh the disturbance to the local community and environment.
That is the overwhelming sentiment expressed in the first batch of submissions to an ACT Assembly inquiry examining the technology's presence in the nation's capital.

The inquiry was ordered last year in the midst of Wing's drone trial in Bonython, which split the local community as opponents campaigned relentlessly against the service.
A total of 39 submissions have been lodged with the committee, with all but a few expressing a negative view of the Bonython trial and strong opposition to the service's expansion to other parts of Canberra.

Drones help researchers fight against wildlife extinction

With their help, researchers can now track wild animals through dense forests and monitor whales in vast oceans. The World Wildlife Fund for Nature estimated that up to five living species on earth become extinct every day, making it vital that universities develop new technologies to capture the data that can persuade those in power to act, theguardian.com wrote.

The British International Education Association and the Born Free Foundation hosted a conference in January to highlight the importance of technological solutions in protecting vulnerable species and ecosystems. Speakers underlined how technology can help conservation efforts: Fixed-wing drones can land on water and circle high above the Indian Ocean to spot whales, rays and illegal fishing, while artificial intelligence-enabled infrared cameras are able to identify members of an individual species or human poachers, even through thick environmental cover.

According to Claudio Sillero, professor of conservation biology at..

The Internet of Things Security Institute releases an Security Framework for Smart Cities and Critical Infrastructure.

Alan Mihalic President of the IoTSI says the objective is to provide frameworks that can be implemented from the base build through to the build completion.

MELBOURNE, VIC, AUSTRALIA, February 17, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Internet of Things Security Institute (IoTSI) announced today that it has released an IoT Security Framework for Smart Cities and Critical Infrastructure under a Common Criteria Licence agreement.

“The goal of the IoT security Institute is to establish a comprehensive set of guidelines to help each of the supply chain participants specify, procure, install, integrate, operate and maintain IoT securely in Buildings, Smart Precincts and C..

UK is close to adding swarming attack drones to its military arsenal

UK is close to adding swarming attack drones to its military arsenal

A drone flies outside of the Aeryon Labs Inc. headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario, on April 14, 2016.

JAMES MACDONALD/BLOOMBERG

Swarms of small attack drones that confuse and overwhelm anti-aircraft defenses could soon become an important part of the modern military arsenal, Britain’s defense secretary said, something that would mark a major evolution in robot-enabled warfare.

Speaking at the London-based Royal United Services Institute think tank, British defense secretary Gavin Williamson said Britain will fund the development of “swarm squadrons of network enabled drones capable of confusing and overwhelming enemy air defenses,” noting that such vehicles would complement the British fleet of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters.

He seemed to confirm what some military experts have said for years: The technology to enable synchronized drone swarms is here, and military leaders are starting to embrace the idea o..

Eyes in the sky: More drones to patrol WA beaches

The WA drones are part of a national rollout of 51 drones.
In 2017-18 Surf Life Saving WA made 730 coastal rescues in WA and 60,900 'preventative' actions.
AdvertisementThe organisation hopes the drones' vision and surveillance technology will improve its ability to spot rips, marine creatures, and distressed swimmers in a quicker and more accurate fashion than from patrols on the beach and in a helicopter.
Surf life saving clubs first started using drones in 2016 when the former Barnett government spent $88,000 on a trial as part of its shark mitigation strategy.
Surf Life Saving WA General Manager Lifesaving Chris Peck said the program would complem..

Chinese drone maker creates no-fly zones around airports in 32 European countries

Chinese drone maker DJI will roll out a system in 32 European countries this month to prevent its drones entering airport flightpaths.

The Chinese firm said Tuesday that its state of the art geofencing will be implemented into drones' GPS systems, using complex shapes and three-dimensional “bow tie” zones around runways.

The decision from DJI comes a few months after London's Gatwick airport suffered three days of flight disruption in December after drones were sighted flying in its vicinity. It led to 1,000 flights being cancelled or diverted, with airline easyJet estimating a loss of almost $20 million as a direct result.

DJI will apply its Geospatial Environment Online (GEO) 2.0 system to 19 new countries, as well as the 13 that already had existing ge..

Trump’s border wall could be a virtual barrier patrolled by drones too

The AeroVironment Puma drone, already used by the military, can be launched by hand.
President Donald Trump has a vision of a “big, beautiful wall” made of concrete and steel on the US-Mexico border. In addition to that physical barrier, you could also see an armada of drones whizzing through the sky.
Many in the tech industry envision a drone-protected border as not just likely but inevitable, helping the US Border Patrol see farther and communicate better. Drones should make it easier for agents to distinguish immigrants and smugglers from the cows and coyotes that prowl along the border, advocates say.
“That could be the 21st century solution to the problem of protecting borders,” said Chris Eheim, chief technology officer of Sunflower Labs, a home security drone startup, and a 15-year aerospace engineer. The US Customs and Border Protection agency already uses some massive military drones with 66-foot wingspans, but modern drone innovation could equip officers with smaller, cheaper..
