This Startup Backed by Bill Gates and DHS Is Gunning to Test Its Anti-Drone Radar at the Super Bowl – Gizmodo

Super Bowl LIII will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in AtlantaPhoto: Justin Heiman (Getty)Civilian use of drones in sensitive airspaces have recently been causing major issues and flight delays at airports in the UK and U.S. After flights were grounded at London’s Gatwick airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey over drone scares, there’s a growing market for technology that can prevent such disruptions.
Echodyne is one startup entering the drone detection space. The Seattle-based company is backed by Bill Gates and focuses on radar technologies, for various purposes including airspace management and border security. The company has also received funding from the Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and the U.S. Navy.

Countering UAVs with Drone Guard

ASHDOD, Israel — Drones are becoming an increasing threat to military and civilian infrastructure. Last month, a drone sighting disrupted flights at Britain’s Gatwick Airport for more than 24 hours, leading to the in-country deployment of the British Army. Operations at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were also disrupted for over an hour on Jan. 22 after reports of a drone sighting. In Iraq and Syria, the international coalition against the Islamic State group has faced a variety of threats from commercial off-the-shelf UAVs.
Elta Systems, a division of Israel Aerospace Industries, demonstrated a possible solution in January with the latest generation of its Drone Guard.
Unveiled in 2015, Drone Guard was built on adapted radar and electro-optical technology with the capability to detect low-signature and low-speed targets. Since then, hundreds of units have been sold to more than 10 countries. It was used by Argentina to secure a G-20 summit and the Youth Olympic G..

The episode exposed a major weakness in a country's ability to respond to a hostile drone attack.
In 2017, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said it had “moderate confidence” that the DJI was “providing US critical infrastructure and law enforcement data ..

Trump Touts ‘Smart Wall, Drones’ in Announcement to Reopen Government Without Wall Funding

President Trump touted the idea of a “smart wall” and “drones” at the United States-Mexico border during his Friday announcement to temporarily reopen the federal government without securing any funding for a border wall.
During an announcement where Trump said he would sign off on a three-week funding bill that includes no border wall funding, he touted using technological barriers at the border rather than “Medieval walls” from “sea to shining sea.”

Trump said:

The walls we are building are not Medieval walls. They are smart walls designed to meet the needs of front line border agents and are operationally effective. These barriers are made of steel, have see-through visibility … and are equipt with sensors, monitors, and cutting edge technology including state-of-the-art drones. [Emphasis added]

We do not need 2,000 miles of concrete wall from sea to shining sea. We never did. We never proposed that. We never wanted that because we have barriers at the border where natural struct..
