Two drones come dangerously close to airports every week

In the past year, rogue drones have caused major disruptions to Auckland and Wellington airports, they've come within 10 metres of the police Eagle helicopter and within five metres of a plane carrying 278 people.

The aviation industry is looking into new methods for detecting drones and regulating their use.

Such incidents have aviation authorities hoping to ensure future incidents don't end in catastrophe.

The national air traffic control agency Airways New Zealand said an average of two drones a week are now coming dangerously close to New Zealand's airports and putting the flying public at risk.

It's calling for tougher rules for drone operators as it works to get ahead of ever-evolving drone technology and avert a mid-air collision.

Airways head of strategy Trent Fulcher said drones were illegally entering restricted airspace frighteningly often.

“What that mean is these are … drones that are coming into controlled space near an airport that aren'..

Scotland Yard asks volunteers to help police skies over Heathrow after airport drone chaos

Scotland Yard is appealing for sharp-eyed plane spotters to help police the skies around Heathrow after drone sightings caused chaos at Gatwick.

Aviation enthusiasts are being asked to join the Met Police’s volunteer scheme, “Heathrow Airport Watch”, to help prevent crime and terrorism.

It comes just weeks after Gatwick Airport was brought to a standstill over Christmas after a device was repeatedly spotted near the airfield. Separate sightings also sparked problems for flights at Heathrow earlier this month.

Tens of thousands of people had their Christmas travel plans disrupted by the rogue drone over Gatwick, which has so far proved impossible to trace.

Proposed regulations on the use of drone technology and new guidance on the government's approach to autonomous vehicles were announced today by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao.

Speaking at the Transportation Research Board conference in Washington, D.C., Chao said her department was ready to issue for public comment a proposal to allow drones to fly at night and over the heads of people without a waiver – which is required under current regulations – as long as certain safety conditions are met.

Under the proposed rule, such waivers will not be required “if an operator has received the appropriate training, and approved testing, and can show that the drone has anti-collision lighting,” Chao said.

Don't miss it. Register today.

(Jamal Saidi/Reuters)Recreational drones haven't caused a major airport shutdown in Canada — like what happened at London's Heathrow Airport earlier this week — but they have led to delays and plenty of near-misses with airplanes.

Amazon secretly testing delivery drones in English countryside

Amazon has been captured secretly testing delivery drones.
The US online giant has kept its programme under close wraps, barring release of a video clip in 2016.
But the Mirror recently snapped test flights at a base in the Cambridgeshire countryside.
The company, which insists it aims to use drones to deliver packages in 30 minutes, has refused to allow journalists access to the test site.
In 2013 boss Jeff Bezos – the world’s richest man – predicted drone deliveries within five years saying: “I know this looks like science fiction, it’s not. Could it be four, five years? I think so.
“It will work and it will happen and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
But that deadline has passed and the airlifts have yet to get the go-ahead in any country.

The drones can be spotted in fields

A major stumbling block is safety with fears over what happens when the craft are out of sight of the operator and how they are able to avoid other objects in the sky.
Drones are also under scrutiny aft..
