Plant breeder taps latest technology to feed the world

Mike Gore, Ph.D. '09, plant geneticist in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, explains corn breeding at Musgrave Research Farm in Aurora, New York, in August.

Mike Gore, Ph.D. ’09, hears the clock ticking. And while it’s not an alarm clock, it’s part of what gets him going every day.

Gore, associate professor of molecular breeding and genetics for nutritional quality, Liberty Hyde Bailey professor and international professor of plant breeding and genetics, conducts research at the intersection of several disciplines. His lab uses quantitative genetics, genomics, analytical chemistry and remote sensing to explore the genetic basis of trait variation in crops such as corn, oat and cassava.

A TerraSentia robot, which is being trained to perform remote diagnostics on individual corn plants, moves between rows of corn at Musgrave Research Farm in Aurora, New York.

Plant breeding has been going on for 10,000 years, he said, but technology – unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs..

Christmas Spectacular in New York will feature 100 Intel Shooting Star Mini drones

The Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes — an annual holiday stage show presented at Radio City Music Hall in New York City — began one year after the Music Hall’s opening night in 1933, which featured the Missouri Rockets dance troupe out of St. Louis. (They’d later move their base of operations to New York City, where they were rechristened the Rockettes after a multi-year stint at the Roxy Theater on Broadway.) What was originally a two-week, 30-minute performance featuring an overture, a ballet, and a handful of vignettes expanded into a 90-minute extravaganza complete with real-life animals, a 36-person cast, 1,100 costumes, and 11 digital projectors that’s been viewed by more than 75 million people. And this year will mark the addition of something new to the mix: more than 100 specially designed Intel drones choreographed over the stage.

Intel says it’s the first time its Shooting Star Mini drones have been incorporated into a theatrical indoor performance, a..
