When Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao earlier this year announced the 10 partnerships to be part of the Federal Aviation Administration's unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) program, she said the United States was at a “tipping” point with drones.

There were already 1 million active devices, with about 100,000 pilots having registered with the FAA.

“We've got to create a path forward for the safe integration of drones if our country is to remain a global aviation leader and reap the safety and economic benefits drones have to offer,” Chao said in outlining the pilot program that extends to October 2020 and is meant to help develop regulations for drones.

The potential safety and economic benefits of drones are why package delivery and e-commerce firms are among those that have started experimenting with them as part of their overall operations.

'Violating' drone seen over Auckland home before statue stolenSTUFFThe Government is looking at tightening up the rules around drones.Drones could face tighter restrictions as the Government assesses what it can do about rogue and dangerous operators.
Briefing notes released under the Official Information Act showed the Ministry of Transport was looking to follow Europe's stricter drone regulations after an increase in complaints to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
However, changes to the rules on drones can't come soon enough for some residents in Auckland.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) popularly known as drones can help countries such as Malawi to plan cities better.
The small aircrafts can be flown to capture data in specific locations or sent to drop items.

Speaking in Zomba during the AfriCity status two-day drone technology training programme attended by various experts linked to urban planning, Steffen Vogt, a German trainer with svGeosolutions explained that urban data is crucial for social economic planning.
“It is very difficult to collect [urban] data from the ground but it is easier and better from above using drones. With rapid migration of people urban resources are not enough to accommodate those from rural areas. There is need, therefore, to plan for available natural resources on hill slopes, housing, power lines, access to water is paramount in order to know where humans are located,” he explained.
