State Farm Gets OK for Long Range Drone Flights to Assess Hurricane Damage

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently granted a waiver to State Farm to allow the insurer the ability to inspect damage caused by Hurricane Florence.

The approval, received just last week, allows State Farm to operate drones on longer range flights and above people – something it could not do operating under Part 107 rules.

“That requirement through the small UAS rules, to maintain the vehicle within line of sight, that can limit how far we can fly and it limits some of the opportunities for us to fully utilize the technology,” Todd Binion, P&C claims staff consultant for State Farm explained. “The other limitation…that creates challenges is the prohibition of flying over people.”

He said that limitation can be problematic during times of disasters when recovery efforts are underway.

The insurer has been testing drone flights since 2012 and currently uses UAVs for single roof inspections.

For about a year, State Farm has partnered with Virginia Tech and the Mid-Atlant..

Project Minerva tests cutting-edge robots and drones at DSTL, Porton Down.

A new fleet of robots and drones designed to test for chemical agents, provide 3D mapping and identify casualties have been put through their paces by British troops, police officers and scientists for the first time.

Tests of the cutting-edge multi-million-pound project, co-funded by the Ministry of Defense and the Home Office, included robots that can ‘read’ and climb stairs and miniature drones weighing less than a bar of soap which could soon come into service to rapidly assess hazardous scenes.

The aim of the ground-breaking research, named Project Minerva, is to reduce the risk to emergency services and front-line troops attending incidents or operations involving hazardous chemical or biological materials.

The recent trials, which took place at Gloucestershire Fi..

Tech log: Electronic conspicuity – Part two

I see you… But do you see me? Part two of our series on electronic conspicuity focuses on the capabilities – and compatibility – of the existing technology

In July’s ‘Tech Log’ we looked at the CAA’s CAP1391 definition of a low-cost electronic conspicuity device for use in Class G ‘see and avoid’ airspace, and the ADS-B (Automatic Dependence Surveillance Broadcast) technology upon which it is based.
In researching the broader range of EC (electronic conspicuity) devices and equipment on the market, it quickly became apparent that some systems are incompatible with others−not the least of the problems being that CAP1391-compliant devices cannot currently be operated alongside a Mode S transponder−and the picture of which device can ‘see’ which is very confusing.
Historically, EC devices have bee..

Reno hosts first complete AED deliveries via drone

The Biggest Little City in the World last week claimed another title when a single operator flew multiple drones delivering automated external defibrillators as part of a Federal Aviation Administration pilot program.

The first flights were successfully completed using drones made by Flirtey that are designed to move heavier payloads over longer distances and for more than one to be flown by a lone “pilot” in Reno, Nev.

“Flirtey just demonstrated deliveries with multiple drones per pilot for the first time, which is a major milestone toward scaling drone delivery nationwide,” Flirtey founder & CEO Matthew Sweeny said in prepared remarks. “We’re excited to be working with our partners and the FAA to save lives and improve lifestyles with Flirtey’s drone delivery.”

“The City of Reno is proud to partner with Flirtey, the FAA, and our local IPP partners to test drone delivery of AEDs to Washoe County residents,” added Reno mayor Hillary Schieve. “Public safety is our top priority, and t..

How drones are changing the way emergency responders work

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — When a tractor-trailer carrying chlorine pool tablets crashed and caught on fire on Interstate 24 in Rutherford County in December 2016, emergency personnel weren’t able to get close enough to assess.

“It was so dangerous, and we weren’t really sure what we were dealing with,” said Cody Smith with Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services, “and we couldn’t wear hazmat suits because they’re not flame resistant.”

A couple of hours into the event, firefighter Jeff Clemente showed up and allowed the team to use his personal unmanned aerial vehicle — commonly known as a drone — for a flyover. The drone was just what the team needed.

“We flew in and got some great footage. We saw that the actual hazardous material wasn’t burning anymore,” said Smith.

Since then, EMS has purchased its own drone system with allotted funds and each shift has a trained pilot on staff, Smith said. And there are plans to add a drone with night vision and thermal imaging capabilities, h..

How a tech pioneer from Salford almost invented Facebook

Wendy Tan White owes a lot to Maggie Thatcher.
While their politics couldn’t be further apart, it was the so-called Iron Lady who taught the tech entrepreneur a crucial lesson: that women can make it to the top.
So that is what she did, first by helping to create Egg, Europe’s first internet bank, and then by founding Moonfruit, the first cloud-based website builder, which she sold six years ago for a life-changing £23m.
These days Tan White invests her time and money into new tech start-ups, while banging the drum for women in tech and for the unimaginable potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
But before this country’s iconic first female Prime Minister came along, Tan White’s mum and dad laid the foundations for her to achieve her ambitions.

Wendy Tan White

When Wendy, 48, stood in front of a packed auditorium at The Lowry, at Salford Quays, recently to accept an honorary doctorate from the University of Salford, there was a sense of her life coming full circle.
It was i..
