Tesla Gigafactory Pumps Out 1,500 Model 3 Batteries, Tesla Model S 75 Discontinued

July 24th, 2017 by Steve Hanley

This story about Tesla and the Gigafactory was first published on Gas2.

If it seems like there is more news about Tesla than any other car company, that’s only because it’s true. More new stuff swirls around the Land of Tesla every day than at most companies in a month — or a year! As the Model 3 nears its first public showing later this week, Tesla is making one move designed to further separate the Model S from its lower priced sibling. It is discontinuing the entry level Model S 75 with rear-wheel drive.

You can still order the car for September delivery, but you better act fast. Once the factory pulls the plug on that car, every vehicle in the Model S and Model X lineup will be built with dual motors. The decision means t..

Iran's Defense Minister General Hossein Dehghan has said his ministry
is able to provide the defense needs of the Armed Forces in the shortest
possible time. Dehghan made the remarks during the official launch of the mass
production line and delivery of Sayyad-3 Missiles, attended by Khatam al-Anbia
Air Defense Base Commander Farzad Esmaili on Saturday.

Designed and constructed by the scientists and experts of Aerospace Industry
at the Ministry of Defense, Sayyad-3 Missile production line was launched on
Saturday morning while a number of missiles were delivered to Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense
Base.
Dhghan said Sayyad-3 high-altitude air-defense missile has been designed with a
range of 120 km and a 27-km flight altitude against airborne threats at medium
and long range.

“Sayyad-3 is designed based on the latest technologies in the world and is
capable of fighting wi..

UK to tighten rules on drones after near-misses with planes

LONDON — British officials announced plans Saturday to further regulate drone use in a bid to prevent accidents and threats to commercial aviation.
The new rules will require drones that weigh eight ounces (226.79 grams) or more to be registered and users will have to pass a safety awareness exam.
The government acted because of concerns that a midair collision between a drone and an aircraft could cause a major disaster. Pilots have reported numerous near-misses in the last year alone in Britain. Earlier this month London’s Gatwick Airport briefly closed its runway over safety concerns when a drone was spotted in the area and several planes had to be diverted.
The British Airline Pilots Association said independent tests show even a small drone could cause severe damage to a helicopter or an airline windscreen. The union’s general secretary, Brian Strutton, said pilots “have been warning about the rise in the number of cases of drones being flown irresponsibly close to aircraft and ai..

Trump attends commissioning of USS Gerald R. Ford

In this photo provided by the U.S. Navy, the USS Gerald R. Ford embarked on the first of its sea trials to test various state-of-the-art systems on its own power for the first time Saturday, April 8, 2017, from Newport News, Va. The first of the Navy's new class of aircraft carriers will spend several days conducting builder's sea trials, a comprehensive test of many of the ship's key systems and technologies. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump helped commission the USS Gerald R. Ford, a $12.9 billion warship that after delays and cost overruns will officially be turned over to the Navy.

Trump, who is commander in chief of the U.S. armed forces, traveled to Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia on Saturday to preside over a ceremony during which the USS Ford, the first member of the next generation of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, was welcomed to the fleet with the words: “Man our ship ..

THOR is a hybrid drone that can transform mid-flight from a helicopter to an airplane

Most consumer drones usually come with rotors, something that makes them very agile but also quite energy-demanding, leading to shorter flights. Bigger drones that are designed to cover long distances usually have wings, which is a more energy-efficient way of flight.

At the ICRA conference last month, a team from the Singapore University of Technology and Design presented a new kind of drone that combines those two flight modes. The device is called THOR, which stands for Transformable Hovering Rotorcraft, and can transition mid-flight from a hover mode to an airplane-like cruising mode by turning its rotors into wings. You can see the drone in action in the video below:

THOR’s creators were inspired by the samara seed, whose unique design allows it to be carried away by the wind farther away than regular seeds. As you can see in the video, the design still needs a bit of tweaking to make the transition from one mode to the other smoother. The team claims that THOR's design can..

Yemen Policy Is Creating More Terrorists

As Iraq finally pries the death grip of the Islamic State off of

its bloodied form, you’d think US policy would reflect the lessons

learned from killing innocent civilians and destroying the basic functions

of a nation. Instead, more than a decade of using drones to “target”

suspected terrorists, the Trump administration has now opened the

door wide for the Saudis to ramp up the carnage in Yemen.

Just as the invasion of Iraq eventually produced the Islamic State

(ISIS or IS), the killing of innocent Yemenis for no moral reason

at all is providing a recruitment tool for terrorist organizations

throughout the Middle East and Africa. And just as the Iraq invasion

was predicated on a false claim of weapons of mass destruction, the

war in Yemen rests on the bogus argument that Iranians

are supporting terrorism in that country. In the first two years

of the conflict in Yemen, the United States was not able to point

to any evidence of Iranian weapons d..
