Parcels could soon be delivered by drone as major trial begins next year

Pilotless drone deliveries have moved a step closer after it was confirmed a test would be held in the new year.

An official trial will see an unmanned small aircraft tested beyond an operator’s visual line of sight, which is currently banned under normal aviation rules.

An operator in a control room ‘will monitor semi-autonomous drones being flown 50 miles away, initially carrying out inspections on construction sites’ in an advanced evaluation in February, the Times reported.

Amazon-style parcel deliveries from the air are not the only advantage that could be gained from pilotless drones.

Benefits could also include long-distance aerial surveys of infrastructure and construction, and surveying the scenes of accidents and crimes, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Currently, drone owners cannot fly above an altitude of 400 ft and must keep the aircraft within their direct line of sight so it does not collide with other aircraft.

After Falling Facade Kills Woman, City Officials Propose Using Drones To Inspect Buildings

After a woman was fatally struck by a piece of building facade that fell from a Midtown building last week, a group of elected officials are backing a plan to legalize drones to perform building inspections.
At the request of Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Brooklyn City Councilmember Justin Brannan said he plans to introduce two City Council bills early next year related to drone technology. One would require that an initial drone inspection be done within 48 hours of a facade-related 311 complaint or Department of Building violation, while the second would authorize the New York City Housing Authority to use drones for initial facade inspections on NYCHA developments.
Although the Federal Aviation Administration approves restricted flights by registered drone pilots, the use of drones is currently illegal in most of New York City. Last year, Brennan, whose Brooklyn district includes Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, and Bensonhurst, proposed a bill that would remove the outright ban a..

NCC Seeks Stakeholders’ Input on Proposed Drones Regulation

Emma Okonji and Ngozi Jibulu

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has met with stakeholders, including the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), to hamonise the proposed regulation and use of drones in Nigeria.

The NCC is considering the use of 2.4 GHz and 5.8GHz spectrum bands for the deployment of drones services in Nigeria to address security and disaster management.

In line with the theme: “Regulation on the Use of Drones,” stakeholders agreed that the Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle (UAV) technology otherwise known as the drone has gone through massive development in recent years, and the market for it shows exponential growth, similar to all other significant new technologies.

The Director, Spectrum Administration at NCC, Austine Nwaulune, said drones have found application in several areas that are contributing to the development of nations, which include security surveillance, shipping and delivery, disaster manag..
