Stunning new footage shot from the sky is offering an invaluable insight into Iceland’s disappearing ice.

Old aerial images have been combined with modern-day drone photography to demonstrate the dramatic fashion in which some its largest glaciers are melting.

The groundbreaking 3D process has been created by Dundee University scientist Kieran Baxter, who has documented the scale of ice-loss on a group of outlet glaciers on the south side of Vatnajokull, one of the largest ice caps in Europe.

Dr Baxter, a researcher at the university’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, led the two-year project in collaboration with the University of Iceland and the Icelandic Meteorological Office, who conduct glacier monitoring in the country.

He said: “We have produced images that are engaging and easy to understand.

“It is important to show how climate change is physically and visib..

India and the US have now identified new technologies for joint development of future warfare systems under the Defense Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI), including drone warfare, light weight arms and networked systems. Confirming that the fighter jet engine programme has been suspended, Ellen M Lord, undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, who ..

NASA Contracts Colorado’s Drone Traffic Technology To Help Pilots

SCHOOL DELAYSSome delays are being announced for schools around Colorado

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – A Colorado start-up is hoping to revolutionize how drones are detected in the air while keeping pilots and passengers safe. Drone Traffic recently won a NASA contract to develop the technology and has been contacted by the FAA to help out around wildfires.

“We’ve already got 100 incidents per month that the FAA has documented where drones are operating where they should not be,” said Drone Traffic CEO and Founder Rick Zelenka. “Several of those incidents are actually collisions between a drone and a small aircraft.”

The idea started when Zelenka returned to flying after a hiatus. He took years off when drone technology started to erupt.

“I was worried about flying the aircraft and what might be out there. I started thinking how would I get to know of warnings of drones that are operating where they shouldn’t be operating,” he said.

The idea is to..

Drones to check for signs of life in disaster recovery

Drones are a quick and cheap tool to check to survey the site of a disaster, but now researchers at the University of South Australia are hoping to get them to check for survivors autonomously.

Engineers from the University of South Australia and Baghdad’s Middle Technical University have developed a new technique to monitor vital signs remotely using computer vision capabilities.

From up to eight metres away, the algorithms can identify human torsos detect small movements of the chest cavity from a person breathing and their heartbeat using only the factory-mounted colour camera on a GoPro Hero 4 drone.

It can also tell if that cardiopulmonary movement is missing, indicating a deceased body.

Professor of sensor systems at the University of Adelaide, Javaan Chahl, said in a statement that the algorithms were validated using eight people – four of each gender and of different ethnic backgrounds- and a mannequin all lying on the ground in different poses.

“Videos were taken of the s..

USAF takes delivery of its first laser powered anti-drone buggy

Raytheon first demonstrated its high-energy laser counter-UAS buggy system last year. The video embedded below provides a summary and shows you the system in operation; spotting, tracking, and zapping a drone from the sky.

Now the defence tech firm has announced that it has delivered the first such unmanned system to the U.S. Air Force. Raytheon says that the system will be deployed overseas “as part of a year-long Air Force experiment to train operators and test the system's effectiveness in real-world conditions”. However, we don't get a hint at its destination, it could be anywhere from Lakenheath to Guam.

Raytheon says this newly deployed system uses “an advanced variant of the company's Multi-spectral Targeting System, an electro-optical/infrared sensor, to detect, identify and track rogue drones”. After targeting the system can neutralise the perceived threat using a high-energy laser weapon system “in a matter of seconds”.

“Five years ago, few people worried a..
