Cyber and drones attacks in Libya: A rising threat to Nigeria

Cyber and drones attacks in Libya: A rising threat to Nigeria

Mon Oct 14th, 2019 –
Niger

By Inwalomhe Donald

Cyber attacks and use of drones in the war in Libya constitute a threat to Nigeria because if Boko Haram and bandits get access to them they will use them. Evolving drone technology in Libya will enable bandits and Boko Haram to make low-cost but highly credible threats against Nigeria and groups that do not possess drones. It is the widespread availability of war drones in Libya that poses the largest threat to Nigeria and, indeed, West Africa as a whole. Almost all the armed groups in Libya use war drones.

Foreign intervention has brought drones and cyber-attacks in Libya. Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones have carried out several air strikes on behalf of the Government of National Accord, GNA and provided air support for its ground forces conducting counter-offensives, most notably helping them rout Haftar’s Libyan National Army, LNA, in the city of Gharyan in late June,..

Toy…….President Akufo-Addo cutting the tape to commission the 2nd medical drone delivery facility

President
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians, especially political
leaders, not to toy with health issues by playing
politics with it.

“Incessant
politicisation of all issues does no credit to Ghanaian politics, health, like
several other aspects of our national life, knows no party colours”.

The
President, who was inaugurating the latest Zipline medical drone distribution centre
at Mpanya, in the Mampong municipality of the Ashanti Region, said he was so
far impressed with the delivery of Zipline, and charged them to make the
remaining drone centres operational as soon as possible, so that many more

UK House of Commons committee finds helicopters most at risk from drones

A new report from the UK’s House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has revealed that helicopters are the most at risk from drones among aircraft due to a number of factors which make them particularly vulnerable. The report comes at a time when the UK, among other countries, is weighing up the pros and cons of different pieces of drone legislation.

According to the latest report, the risk factors for helicopters are three-fold. The British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) listed them as follows:

Helicopters are often required to be flown in dense urban areas or in mission critical scenarios where the margin for error is very small.
A large number of helicopter missions are to incidents where there is likely to be an increase in drone activity anyway, such as traffic accidents, police incidents etc.

More must be done to understand the risks posed by drones to public safety and privacy, with clearer penalties, the Government has been told by a group of MPs.
The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has been examining the rise of drones, in a bid to address increased fears following a number of near-misses with aircraft.
It is calling for a white paper by summer 2020, that sets out plans to integrate drones into society, mitigating the risks while maximising the technology’s potential for innovations like parcel delivery and human transportation.

Sorry, this content isn't available on your device.

The committee wants to see clarity on penalties relating to improper drone use in a forthcoming Drones Bill, with explicit penalties on using the devices as weapons, disabling in-built safety features and failure to register them..
