Police deploy drones in hunt for sheep rustlers as battle against rural crime goes high-tech

Night drone patrols have been launched by police investigating the slaughter of sheep as part of a new high-tech efforts to combat the UK’s worst rural crime wave in seven years.

The drones have been deployed after 80 animals were killed on farms in Northamptonshire before being butchered and sold illegally to restaurants and shops. Officers have said the drone will be used alongside extra ground patrols.

“A lot of the crimes have happened in quite remote locations,” said Sgt Sam Dobbs, from Northamptonshire Police. “You physically can't see from the road what's going on. The drone can cover such a large area and see such a lot at night with the thermal imaging.”

It is the latest state-of-the-art…

Cape Town wants to use drones to fight crime

The City of Cape Town plans to be the first municipality in South Africa to use drones to fight crime.

Speaking to the Weekend Argus, mayoral committee member JP Smith said that the city has already sent staff for training but was still waiting for official approval for the use of drones from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

“To our knowledge, there are no other municipalities in the country that are using drones or investigating the use of drones. Cape Town would be one of the first municipalities to undertake such an initiative,” he said.

While the city will be limited by regulations as to where and when it may fly drones, it indicated that it plans to use the drones in areas such as Philippi where there have been multiple cases of cable theft.

Security estates

While Cape Town may be the first municipality to use drones for security purposes, a number of private security estates around the country are already using drones to keep their perimeters secure.

Middle schoolers already learning how to fly drones

BY TIANA HEADLEY
MIAMI HERALD/TNS

MIAMI – Whirring sounds accompanied by the laughs and shrieks of kids filled the air as a drone flew overhead.

Nearly 10 years ago, only the military or police had this technology.

Recently, students in the After-School All-Stars (ASAS) summer camp at Ruben Dario Middle School, flew mini-drones through hula hoops and over their school’s roof as part of a program called Discover Drones.

Since June 10, more than 60 students have learned how to operate a drone and navigate obstacles through computer software. The kids built their own drones and flew mini ones for the first time in the school’s recess court.

Tech exposure

The program is a collaboration between ASAS South Florida and Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), which aims to expose youth to the world of innovation through technology.

Students at Andover Middle School in Opa-locka and North Dade Middle School in Miami Gardens also tested the program.

“We want to immerse students in as..

Originally published on August 1, 2019 6:31 am These days, drones are everywhere–from the ones you can buy at your local Costco to news drones giving birds' eye views of sporting events. Soon, you'll even be able to get your Amazon deliveries with the company's “Prime Air” drone fleet.
