Drone delivery company confident of taking flight in Queensland

AdvertisementA Google-backed drone delivery company is confident it will be welcomed by south-east Queensland residents, after hitting some turbulence in its previous Australian rollout.
Wing is looking to set up operations in Logan with a proposed fleet of about 30 drones initially servicing the suburbs of Crestmead and Marsden.
Phil Swinsburg, Wing’s global head of flight operations, said they hoped to eventually expand to all of Logan and from there to other cities in south-east Queensland.
Wing's fleet of delivery drones are set to take to the skies of Logan, pending approval from CASA.
“The southern part of [greater] Brisbane is one of the fastest-developing areas in the country, and we want to offer a service that can complement the expanding nature of those suburbs,” Mr Swinsburg said.

Drones ease the backbreaking work of the Kingdom’s farmers

Having witnessed first-hand the dangers faced by humans when spraying pesticide, IT graduate Heng Sopheak decided to quit his job to research and create pesticide spraying drones that are already being put to work in several of the Kingdom’s provinces.

Called the Sprayer Drone, or Sprayer Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Sopheak’s agricultural drone offers a major innovation for farmers in the Kingdom, where agriculture remains the major industry for inhabitants of rural areas.

Hailing from the rice growing and cashew nut producing province of Kampong Thom, Sopheak completed his bachelor’s degree in Information Technology at Norton University in 2003.

While working in IT and human resources for a garment factory in Phnom Penh, he began researching agricultura..

Drones to get off ground at Husker Harvest Days

The drones are coming. Actually, they are already here. Unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, are being used for new applications across the agriculture sector.

Like so many technologies that have originated with the military, UAVs have become tools of the trade for farmers and ranchers, no matter if the devices are quadcopters, hexacopters or fixed wing.

UAV demonstrations began at Husker Harvest Days in 2015 in the southeast quadrant of the show grounds, just across South Shuttle Road from Syngenta Square and the antique farming exhibits. Again this year, UAV demonstrations will return, allowing manufacturers and marketers a chance to demonstrate and discuss their systems and unique applications and services for producers.

“Farmers are still learning different applications for UAVs,” says Greg Austin, chief consultant at FullField Ag and coordinator of the HHD UAV demonstrations. As a certified pilot, Austin knows all about the rules and regulations governing UAV use in agriculture..

UPS pushes FAA for drone delivery permission

UPS pushes FAA for drone delivery permission

Another big package delivery company has asked the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to fly drones for commercial air delivery. UPS said in a July 23 statement that it plans to expand on an initial program to deliver medical samples for a North Carolina hospital if the FAA approves the certificate.

The delivery giant also formed a subsidiary business, UPS Flight Forward, to operate the business.

“When approved, this certification lays the foundation for drone flights beyond an operator’s visual line of sight and for flights occurring day or night,” UPS officials said in the statement. Flights beyond the line of sight of operators require special FAA approval.

In March, under FAA’s oversight, UPS began using drones to supplement its ground deliveries of medical samples to WakeMed’s flagship hospital in Raleigh, N.C. “UPS intends to expand its drone delivery service to other hospitals or campus settings,” according to the com..

Drones Being Used to Find Sharks Off SoCal Coast (Published Friday, July 26, 2019)New drone technology is helping lifeguards and marine biologists spot great white sharks swimming along San Diego's coastline.
The drone from Cal State University Long Beach's Shark Lab helped lifeguards warn swimmers and surfers about a 6-foot juvenile great white shark that was spotted off Del Mar on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
The addition of the drones in recent weeks is partially the reason for the increased frequency of shark sightings, according to Chris Lowe, Ph.D., Director of the Shark Lab.
Lowe's team was granted $3.75 million from the state in June to monitor shark activity along the Southern California coast this su..

Canada police use drones, dogs in hunt for teenage murder suspects

By Moira Warburton
(Reuters) – Canadian police were using drones and dogs to scour harsh terrain in northern Manitoba on Thursday in the search for two teenagers wanted in the killings of three people, including an American woman and her Australian boyfriend.
Late on Wednesday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police charged Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, with the second-degree murder of Leonard Dyck, 64, a botany professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
The pair were originally reported as missing last Friday but were later described as suspects in the killing of Chynna Deese, 24, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and her boyfriend, Lucas Fowler, 23, of Sydney, Australia.
The Globe and Mail reported that Schmegelsky and McLeod had been linked to social media accounts and chatrooms promoting far-right-wing ideology and communism, including on YouTube and Steam, a video-game distribution platform.
The RCMP said on Thursday that the pair were last seen on Monday in..

Katherine Ottmers

NMHU News:

LAS VEGAS, NM ― New Mexico Highlands University environmental science management graduate student Katherine Ottmers will be using drones to conduct innovative New Mexico wetlands research, thanks to a scholarship from the New Mexico Geographic Information Council.

This is the first known time that drones, unmanned aerial systems, will be used to monitor wetlands in New Mexico.

The New Mexico Environment Department invited Ottmers to submit a proposal to develop drone-based wetlands monitoring, with Playa Lakes in Southeast New Mexico one possible research site. Ottmers is awaiting news on her Environmental Protection Agency grant proposal to further support her research.

“My overall research goal is to provide timely and accessible wetlands data in 3D drone technology to natural resources decision makers on public and private properties,” Ottmers said. “In New Mexico, this approach could help r..

Tucson Tech: Old Pueblo in on the map as growing source of tech talent

An artist’s concept of a MAD-FIRES missile hitting an anti-ship missile.

When it comes to technology talent, Tucson can’t yet compete with giants like San Francisco and Seattle.
But Tucson recently got on the map — literally — as an up-and-coming, smaller North American market for top tech talent in a report issued by CBRE Research.
CBRE’s recently released 2019 “Scoring Tech Talent” report names Tucson at the top of a list, and on a map, of smaller markets experiencing rapid growth in technology-related employment, dubbed “The Next 25 Markets.”

The report ranks Tucson at the top of CBRE’s list of up-and-comers with a 90% increase in tech employment from 2013 to 2018, to 15,700 workers, and a 29% increase in average tech wages, to $90,528.
Phoenix ranked 20th among the 50 largest metro areas for tech talent.
“Tucson has many ingredients to justify itself as the top up-and-coming tech talent market,” said Matt Siegel, managing director of CBRE in Tucson.
He cited initiatives by the ..
