Rostec unveils ‘smart’ complex to battle drones

Rostec unveils 'smart' complex to battle drones
The Sozvezdie Concern, part of the Ruselectronics holding of Rostec State Corporation, has unveiled the Solaris-N, Russia’s first automatic radio-electronic complex to battle unmanned aerial vehicles, at the Interpolitex 2018 exhibition. This new technology provides protection from drones on an area of up to 80 square kilometers.

The “smart” system protects territory from penetration by drone automatically, with no need for an operator. The reconnaissance equipment in the complex detects a flying object, analyzes its trajectory and the structure of its signal, and on that basis it independently determines whether it is a drone and makes a decision on further actions.

After identifying an object as an unmanned aerial vehicle, the complex begins to act on it with radio interference, blocking its channels for receiving and transmitting data and disabling its navigation and time support equipment. This causes the drone to lose ..

High-tech solutions to oilfield challenges a hot topic at Bakken conference

BISMARCK — This year’s Bakken Conference and Expo showcases some high-tech solutions for solving pressing issues in North Dakota's oil patch, with speakers touting drones and a new use for excess natural gas that would otherwise be flared off at well sites.
The head of a drone company headquartered in Grand Forks told an audience gathered in the Bismarck Event Center on Tuesday, July 16, that unmanned aircraft systems are becoming increasingly popular for use within the oil and gas industry.
Drones are capable of using Light Detection and Ranging, or LiDAR, technology to model terrain, said Matt Dunlevy, president and CEO of SkySkopes. The equipment uses lasers, which bounce off the ground to survey the landscape below.
“That’s one of the big advancements in the Bakken right now,” Dunlevy said.
He said drones equipped with LiDAR can help the oil and gas industry detect where ground has shifted. That could help pipeline operators identify where there’s a risk of a leak.

Five key questions about drones in NZ

The Herald answers some key questions around drones, and how they've been policed in New Zealand to date.
Why have drones been such a headache for regulators?
Hobby and commercial drones exploded in popularity around 2014 and have become more popular as their prices become cheaper, their technology improves and they become ever more accessible. While many of us might see drones as toys, they're anything but. Because they can create a hazard to people, property – and more importantly, planes and helicopters – regulators treat them as aircraft. Their rise in popularity came with the introduction of legalities and ethics, with the CAA releasing new rules for the flying of unmanned aircraft in August 2015.
So what have those rules been?
Advertisement Advertise with NZME. They're namely parts 101 and 102 of the CAA Rules. All drone operators have to comply with parts 101, which requires, among other basics, that drones only to be flown in daylight, to not fly higher than ..

Russia’s New, Bizzare B-2 Look-alike Stealth Drone Is up to Something

But what?Russia's New, Bizzare B-2 Look-alike Stealth Drone Is up to Something
The Chkalov satellite imagery indicates Hunter-B has a wingspan of around 50 feet, making it roughly the same size as the X-47B or an Su-34 manned fighter. Size confers volume and hints that Hunter-B, whatever its stealth qualities, might possess a large fuel load and a correspondingly long range.
Russia’s prototype stealth drone will make its first flight in July or August 2019, state media reported.
The Hunter-B drone will be fully autonomous and follow a pre-programmed flight path, according to Russian news agency TASS.
“The Russian defense establishment is promising a test that will include a short-duration 'jump'—the [unmanned combat air vehicle] will rise ever so briefly above the tarmac to test its launching and landing capabilities,” said Samuel Bendett, an independent expert on the Russi..

Drones provide high-tech way of measuring bunk silo feed

Measuring the amount of feed in a bunk silo usually means getting on top of the feed and getting out the old measuring tape, yardstick or other measuring tool.

A new startup in upstate New York is trying to change the game by offering drone flights to measure bunk feed amounts and other data.

Aurox, located in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., started test flights in 2017 and made its first commercial flight on a 700-cow dairy in Washington County last year. Today, the company has done drone flights on 100 farms in New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont, with 10 farms getting regular flights, according to Adam Durrin, co-founder of Aurox.

He says the drones can give nearly exact measures of bunk feed volume, down to 1-inch accuracy, in a 10-minute flight.

Durrin, who founded a drone company before co-founding Aurox, says the technology was developed after getting in touch with nutritionists. It then evolved into getting precise measurements of bunk feed volume to measure out feed ..
