NYPD To Unleash Drone Technology To Keep City Safe On Fourth Of July

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Buzzing high above the East River is one of two new NYPD drones that will be flying over millions of spectators expected at the Fourth of July fireworks show Thursday.
“We can’t have a cop in every location but we could fly the drone to see what’s going on,” the NYPD’s Frank DiGiacomo said.

The Technical Assistance Response Unit (TARU) took CBS2 along exclusively as its specially trained drone pilots practiced taking off from Brooklyn Bridge Park. On Thursday, police will patrol from the sky with their feet still on the ground.

“We’ll go up, give command staff perspective of where they need to move personnel around,” Det. Deeu John said.

“Once you spot something, then what happens?” CBS2’s Ali Bauman asked.

“Then we make a notification. Either we call our fellow police officers, we have emergency service, we have FD, EMS,” DiGiacomo added.

The NYPD only started using drones eight months ago and plan to put the..

The best drones under $100

Drone flying is a popular hobby, even despite government regulation and angry neighbors outright shooting at drones, but newcomers might find it daunting to get started, given how expensive drones can be. Thankfully, you don’t need to drop $2000 on a drone with all the bells and whistles; you don’t even need to spend $200. There are some great, functional drones available at $100 or less, and while they may not be the flashiest or the most powerful, they’ll give you a lot of the features you would want in a premium drone.
The best
DJI Tello

One of our favorite drones in general, the DJI Tello packs in all the power and features possible while keeping the price under $100. Although it doesn’t come with a controller (you can buy one separately) the Tello is easy to control via smartphone, thanks to its DJI flight controller, and its sturdy frame means that, even if you crash, your drone won’t shatter on the living room floor. You can do tricks and flips with the Tello, and getting it ai..

Tucson Tech: Coyote gets new teeth as Raytheon builds counter-drone tech

Raytheon recently developed the Coyote Block 1B, above, a drone fitted with an advanced target seeker and a warhead to destroy enemy drones in a kamikaze fashion.

The Army is looking to meet the looming threat of swarms of enemy drones with the help of Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems and some legacy Tucson tech.
At the recent Paris Air Show, Raytheon announced that a counter-drone system consisting of its small, expendable Coyote unmanned aircraft and a portable Raytheon radar system had reached “initial operational capability,” meaning it is ready to put into the hands of soldiers in the field.
The concept of the anti-drone system — which the Army is calling Howler — is to use tube-launched Coyotes, linked with the system’s truck-mounted radar, to hunt down and kill enemy drones on the fly.

Raytheon recently developed the Coyote Block 1B version used with the Howler system, fitting the drone with an advanced target seeker and a warhead to destroy drones in kamikaze fashion.

James Murdoch bets on drones after leaving the family business

AdvertisementJames Murdoch will have a new tech venture to discuss when he joins the other billionaires milling about at the annual Allen & Co. retreat in Idaho next month.
The younger son of media magnate Rupert Murdoch, who parted ways with the family business after it struck a $US71 billion ($56 billion) deal to sell a swath of assets to Walt Disney this year, has backed the seed round of a Norwegian drone technology company.

UBIQ Aerospace, which refers to itself as a “deep tech startup,” announced that it has raised seed financing from Murdoch's Lupa Systems and Norwegian tech accelerator NTNU Accel. The business hopes to introduce new de-icing systems — called D-ICE — that will “transform” unmanned aircraft operations in cold climates.
The company's first product is being targeted as much for commercial use as military use, UBIQ Aerospace Chief Executive Officer Kim Lynge Sorensen said in an interview.
