Spending bill has $100 million for border surveillance tech

A drone manufactured by Elbit Systems is displayed at a trade show in 2016. The company has installed surveillance technology at the US Mexico border in Arizona.
Democrats have been pushing for a technological approach to border security. Now, the spending bill being considered by Congress contains $100 million to fund that approach.
The money is set aside for “technologies such as fixed towers, remote video surveillance systems, mobile surveillance capability on the northern border, and innovative towers,” according to an explanatory statement from the US House Committee on Appropriations.
The bill has been approved by the Senate, and must be approved by the House and signed by President Donald Trump to become law. The White House said Thursday that the president plans to sign the bill.
The towers referred to in the memo are most likely sensor-covered structures that can detect movement from miles away with radar and infrared enhanced cameras. Security tech companies Anduril and Elbit..

Australian weapon tech DroneShield scores a bullseye in South America

Anti-drone tech manufacturer DroneShield is proving increasingly popular with foreign governments, with the company announcing today announcing a “major South American governmental agency” has placed an order for its latest DroneGun.

The ASX-listed company hasn’t revealed any details about which company placed the order, other than the fact it’s allied with the US (so presumably this excludes Venezuela).

This will be the first time the DroneGun Tactical (pictured above with Christopher Pyne) will be deployed in South America, although other anti-solutions have been purchased by the Paraguayan government and a mystery government in central America.

Despite the DroneGun Tactical being assigned a NATO Stock Number earlier this month to speed up international procurement processes, the sale to the unnamed South American government still needs regulatory approval from the US, where DroneShield also has operations in the state of Virginia.

The sci-fi-esque DroneGun interrupts signals bet..

An easier way for drones to take flight

While many in the general aviation community worry about drones flooding the National Airspace System — and wreaking havoc — drone pilots operate under rigorous requirements to obtain authorization before taking flight in controlled airspace.

And a new FAA program is making the authorization system more efficient and speedy.

It’s known as LAANC (pronounced lance), which stands for Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability.

Before the nationwide implementation of LAANC in 2018, pilots of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) — commonly known as drones — who wanted to fly in controlled airspace had to file a request on the FAA’s DroneZone website.

This process, which is still available, involves filling out a very detailed form describing the nature of your request. For drone pilots it wasn’t the hassle of filling out the form that was exasperating, but the extremely long delays in processing each request. While 90 days was considered the “normal” processing time to receive a ya..

Which 5 Technologies Are On Investors’ Radars In 2019?

At the Paris Fintech Forum I spoke with investors and companies about their expectations for the high tech market for 2019. They were asked which areas of business and technology look most promising and attractive in the eyes of professional investors. The opinions varied but it turned out that the majority of investment preferences related to five emerging technologies and trends expected to hit the market this year. These are wireless technology (5G), AR and VR, micro-transportation, robotics, and SaaS.

5G Technology
A number of investors said it's time for new technologies to mainstream and large companies and venture-hubs are actively testing 5G, which has all the chances to hit the market in the second half of 2019. The financial potential of 5G, which stands for the Fifth Generation Wireless Technology, is currently valued at hundreds of billions of dollars. As stated by a recent Accenture (NYSE:) report, the estimated profit to be added to the US GDP is $500 billion, with ..

MISSOULA – A group of businesses gathered over the weekend to bring some of the most advanced technology to Montana firefighters and other emergency responders.

Axmen employee Aaron Hansen says this kind of event is crucial when it comes to keeping our emergency crews safe year round.

“If you can make a little bit of a difference it can mean the difference between life and death. It can also really increase safety just in general it also makes it easier for you to do your job and the job is really important so any kind of improvement in performance everybody’s cracking on that,” Hansen said.

There were drones equipped with microphones so you could talk with victims waiting for rescue, demonstrations using some of the latest technology, and Snickers — a brand out of Europe, made an appearance to sell some of its apparel in person.

For many of ..
