We will implement the project over three years. Our aim is to ensure the safety of women in Mumbai,” the officer added.
He also explained that other proposals include awareness campaigns to promote the safety of women online and in the real world; installation of QR code/radio frequency identification in taxis/autos; building of toilet blocks, three old-age homes and seven hostels for women. Illumination of beaches, dark areas and places below flyovers; creation of women hawking streets and plying of women-exclusive double-decker buses are other initiatives being proposed.
“We have proposed taxi desks at all public transport junctions, more police presence at suburban stations, women beat marshals and POCSO desks at every police station, and a special cyber cell for women,” the officer said.
The source added that besides training of investigating officers, prosecutors and judicial officers, the project will also strengthen the Police Didi Programme wherein female officers interact with women living in slums on the issue of sexual harassment and abuse.
“We propose to also tackle social abuse of women on social media,” he said. “We have proposed to instal 750 call and public address boxes in each region. Five isolated locations in each police station jurisdiction will be lit up,” he concluded.
The officer said for the first time the law-enforcing agencies will involve at least 10 educational institutions in implementing the ambitious project.
“GIS mapping of criminal hotspots is a new concept. Also, a track-me solution will be introduced and it will help track victims. We will have dedicated tools for crime against women and will use cyber technology to tracking social media abuse,’’ he said.
The IPS officer said emphasis will also be on training officers to handle cases involving women and registration of offences.
