High-tech ‘backpack sensors’ help farmers and biologists track bees

AdvertisementWashington: Scientists have been using tracking devices on large animals for decades to monitor the health of a herd, or study an animal's range and habits.
Now, a group of University of Washington researchers has figured out how to put a tiny tracking sensor on a bumblebee.

The sensor 'backpack' weighs as much as seven grains of dry rice, and can be glued to the back of the insect. One day, a fleet of bees equipped with these sensors could help farmers monitor the health of their crops, and give biologists insights into how bees forage for food, find pollen and navigate through the environment.
To put a backpack on a bee, researchers had to solve two riddles: How to make a sensor lightweight enough to be bee-friendly, and how to use it to track the insect's location.

Medical drone deal suspension would cause judgment debt – Ayine

General News of Saturday, 15 December 2018

2018-12-15

Former Attorney General, Dominic Ayine

Former Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, has refuted a call by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) for the medical drone deal to be suspended.

The Bolga East Member of Parliament says although it was wrong for the controversial agreement to be approved by Parliament without the GMA’s input, the call for suspension may be misplaced.

“I don’t agree with them because if you look at the agreement itself, in accordance with its own internal logic, there is no provision made for suspension.

“So if there is a unilateral suspension, for instance on the part of the Ministry of Health, then that could be counted as an event of default…and in that case it means it would trigger dispute resolution, and subsequently if we are found wanting…then you can be sure that we can be made to pay a judgement debt,” the MP said.

He notes for instance that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) ..

Immediate past General Secretary for the Ghana Association of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists, Micheal Amo Omari has disclosed that no laboratory Scientist has been consulted on the drone healthcare delivery programme.
“I am saying this for a fact that no Laboratory Scientist or any of our stakeholder bodies have been consulted on the 12.5 million-dollar drone contract project,” he said.
According to him, no laboratory Scientist is against the introduction or implementation of the Zipline project, but the country at its health delivery level presently is not ready to welcome such a programme and has no credentials to efficiently manage it.
He stated that the state will benefit more should government use the loan allocated for the Zipline contract to build more laboratory centres in the places targeted for the project, since there are a lot of p..

Who Killed Tunisian Drone Expert Mohammed Al-Zawari?

Filmmaker: Ashraf Mashharawi

On December 15, 2016, a 49-year-old Tunisian man was shot dead outside his home in Sfax, 270 kilometres south-east of Tunis.

Mohammed al-Zawari had been known locally as an aviation engineer interested in drone technology, but in fact, he had led a double life, heading a drone development project for the military wing of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades.

According to Al Jazeera Arabic's investigation by Tamer Almisshal, several parties were involved in a coordinated plot against al-Zawari, who up until his death was called 'Mourad' by many of those who knew him, including his wife.

Almisshal believes it has all the hallmarks of an extrajudicial killing by Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad, but these cases are notoriously difficult to prove and must for the moment remain speculation.

Al-Zawari first left Tunisia in 1991 as a dissident against the regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. He managed to travel using a fake passport and worked in..
